Its name comes from Brittevilla or Brettevilla (“ville bretonne” or Breton town), evoking the Breton occupation in the 9th C.

The village is situated right by the sea, with a safe beach (wide expanse of sand, gently sloping). Bretteville-sur-Ay offers a range of open-air activities such as sand yachting.

It is also the birthplace of 19th C historian and archivist Siméon LUCE, famous for his work on the sources of French history.
