THE DISTRICT’S RELIGIOUS BUIDLINGS

The district boasts an impressive religious heritage, including the Abbaye Saint-Trinité de Lessay which is considered a masterpiece of Norman Romanesque art.  The churches at St-Germain-sur-Ay, Créances and Vesly all possess imposing fortified bell-towers with double pitched roofs so distinctive of the Cotentin’s religious architecture.  Also worth a mention is the church at Laulne which was completely rebuilt in contemporary style following bomb damage in 1944.


The district also has a number of pretty little chapels, including two at Millières, one dedicated to Saint-Roch and the other to Saint Wilmer- Saint-Wandrille; one at Pirou-Plage especially for sailors; as well as the Chapelle de la Consolation at Vesly, with its legend linking a horseman to the site.  The priory at St-Germain-sur-Ay originally belonged to the Benedictine Abbey at Mont St-Michel.

A number of local churches contain valuable treasures, some of which are listed by the Monuments Historiques et Sites (Anneville-sur-Mer, Créances, La Feuillie, Saint-Patrice-de-Claids, Angoville-sur-Ay, Bretteville-sur-Ay).


There are several places of worship dedicated to healing in the area which are still popular today,  such as in Vesly church where Sainte Walburge is invoked for childhood diseases or the chapel at Millières where Saint Wilmer is called upon to heal abdominal illness.  At Gerville-la-Forêt, appeals are made to Saint Blaise (represented in one of the windows) to make skin problems better.
