The Whelk Festival was established in 1996 by fishermen and volunteers.
Organised by an association for three years, then by Pirou Town Hall for the next couple of years, since 2001 the Festival has been organised by a sub-committee of the "Pirou Festival and Entertainment" association.
The event is organised in partnership with the Town Hall, local fishermen and traders, various stall-holders, loyal sponsors and an army of volunteers.
The Festival takes place over two days, with activities organised on different themes : selling of products harvested from the sea; a market of local products; exhibitions in the local community centre; a jumble sale; fairground; a seafood evening, and an open-air concert on the Sunday afternoon. The whelk festival takes place every year on the last weekend of April.
