The local inhabitants are known as Pirouais, partly explained by the village’s name of Pirou but also very close to the Norman patois word Pirot which means goose.

Pirou has been a family seaside resort, since the 20th C. In Pirou the main fishing industry is centred on whelks, “les buccins”, and it is one of the five shellfish producing areas of the Manche.

Another of Pirou’s attractions is the 12th C medieval fortress, one of the few still standing in the county.
